This weekend we saw the Gamers8 SF 6 tournament take place. While the Capcom Cup is in full swing, this event featured a prize pool of $1 million just for a single weekend of competition. The Gamers8 SF 6 tournament was one of the biggest events in fighting games for 2023. We even saw a big upset take place, with EVO champion AngryBird just losing out.

The Gamers8 tournament saw some unexpected results. EVO champion AngryBird started the bracket up against Nephew. He took the player out followed by kilzyou, both with firm wins. AngryBird then moved through to face DCQ, who he dominated with a simple 3-0 win. This moved AngryBird through to the Gamers8 Street Fighter 6 final.
In the Winners Final AngryBird was up against Kakeru. He’d sailed through the bracket so far with a few 3-1 wins and eventually beating out Capcom Cup champion MenaRD. In the first Winners Final, AngryBird dominated things winning 3-0. That sent Kakeru down to the losers’ bracket, where he had to beat punk to get another shot at the title.
In a second round, things went differently though. Kakeru this time took out AngryBird. The player won the first round 3-1, forcing a bracket reset. He went on to take down AngeyBird in the second round, with a clean 3-0 victory. Coming back from losing in the first round definitely marked Kakeru out as an impressive talent in Street Fighter 6 right now.
Gamers8 Street Fighter Preview
We’re in a pretty busy period for fighting games right now. Last weekend saw EVO held, with one of the biggest tournaments for most of the major titles, but a particularly impressive one from SF 6 at EVO. There’s another major tournament for the game coming just the weekend after EVO, with the Gamers8 Street Fighter 6 Invitational.
As an invitational this is a bit more of a limited event than we’ve seen recently. However, there’s 32 of the very best players coming to the tournament. With a $1,000,000 prize pool, this event is rivalling the Capcom Cup as a whole in some ways. This is how the tournament is going to work.

Gamers8 SF 6 Tournament
The Gamers8 Street Fighter 6 tournament is a one-off event as part of the wider Gamers8 series. Its bringing in one of the biggest fighting games for a single tournament. It’s taking place over August 10-13, starting with a group stage before moving on to the Finals. There are only 32 players invited, competing for $1,000,000 in the prize pool.
The Gamers8 Street Fighter 6 tournament is an invitational, so the format is a bit of a change from the normal wider events. We’re going to start things off with a group stage here. Players are divided into 8 groups of four players. They play each other in a double round-robin format, with a first to 2 wins for each. At the end of this, the top 2 players move forward to the bracket and the rest are eliminated. These are the groups at the Gamers9 SF 6 tournament.

After the Group Stage has wrapped up, we move into a double elimination bracket. This is with 16 players from the top of the group. Each match here is best of 3. This bracket will whittle things down until we find the top SF 6 player at the tournament.
Most of the major names in the game so far are showing up for the Gamers8 SF 6 tournament. It’ll be interesting to see if AngryBird can repeat his win at EVO, especially with such a stacked roster of competitors.
