Expand reach and flexibility in extreme conditions with John Deere’s new logging solutions
A new shovel logger and directional felling head are designed with advanced planning technology and hardware suited to steep slopes
John Deere has expanded its shovel logger portfolio with the new 859ML and the new factory-installed FL90 Directional Felling Head option for the 959ML. Engineered for steep-slope logging and demanding forestry applications, the new solutions deliver performance in the woods by reducing the reliance on manual felling, while improving timber handling efficiency from initial cut to final extraction.
Both the new 859ML Shovel Logger and FL90 Directional Felling Head feature a new, integrated control system that enables advanced productivity tools, including stem counting, diameter measuring, and access to TimberMatic Maps.

When equipped with the new FL90 Directional Felling Head, the 859ML and 959ML machines offer a combination of reach, manoeuvrability, and cutting capability for steep-slope and confined harvesting applications. On the 959ML, the new Live Heel availability with the FL90 further expands reach and flexibility for directional felling applications.
In addition, both shovel logger models feature a new, integrated control system that enables advanced productivity tools including stem counting, diameter measuring, and access to TimberMatic Maps, helping operators collect valuable production data while improving job site visibility and planning.
Further enhancing performance in steep-slope applications, a new longer undercarriage option is available for the 859ML and 959ML Shovel Loggers. Designed in response to customer feedback, the longer track frame increases overall ground engagement to provide greater machine stability when working on steep slopes while reducing ground pressure across the machine footprint by approximately 5 percent. The updated undercarriage also features an additional slide and roller for improved track support, along with updated levelling pins and bushings designed to maintain tighter, more consistent joints for enhanced operator comfort and productivity.
Built with a durable one-piece frame and capable of cutting stems up to 960mm (37.8 inches), the FL90 Directional Felling Head combines fast operating cycles with dependable durability for demanding forestry environments. This specialty felling head is ideal for applications that require a lighter, more versatile directional felling head, with visible daily service points and optimized hose routing to help simplify maintenance when needed.
“Operating in steep slope environments puts another level of demand on forestry professionals as safety and productivity requirements don’t change because of the terrain,” said Jim O’Halloran, global product marketing manager, John Deere. “With the introduction of the 859ML and 959ML Shovel Loggers, paired with the specially crafted FL90, we’re delivering purpose-built machine solutions that provide customers with impressive versatility and confidence to tackle challenging directional felling applications.”
