Vikrum Digwa, the man convicted of murdering British teenager Henry Nowak and falsely accusing him of racism, reportedly arrived at one of the United Kingdom’s highest-security prisons “shaking” in fear. According to a prison service source who spoke to the Daily Mail, Digwa arrived at HMP Frankland “terrified.”
“I mean literally shaking. He was in total fear – there was none of that arrogance you saw on the police camera. I think he thought he wouldn’t survive the first night,” the source said. “He is on a special watch list because of the recent murders in Frankland and he fits into the category of people who are at risk because of the nature of his crime and the fact that he is now a high-profile prisoner,” the source continued. “There are cons in Frankland who will have a go at him, physically as well as verbally, because of who he is and so they can boast that they were the one who beat the sh*t out of him.”
“Unfortunately his body language makes him look like a bit of a victim. He has scared eyes,” the source added.
“I’ve no idea whether he was some sort of hard man outside of prison but in Frankland he looks terrified most of the time and that can invite an attack.”
The source that spoke to the outlet described Digwa as vulnerable in the prison due to the nature of his crime. The report comes amid a series of recent killings inside UK prisons, including murders involving convicted sex offenders.
Speculation has grown that Digwa could be vulnerable because of how high-profile his case has been. Digwa was convicted of fatally stabbing 18-year-old Henry Nowak with a ceremonial Sikh dagger. When police arrived at the scene, Digwa falsely claimed that Nowak had racially abused him, leading to officers handcuffing the stabbed teen as he was bleeding out. When Nowak tried to tell officers he couldn’t breathe and had been stabbed, an officer responded, “I don’t think you have, mate.” Nowak was read his rights before officers realized he was unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident led to widespread outrage in the county and worldwide, particularly among the political right. Right-wing activist Tommy Robinson promoted nationwide protests, while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called the incident “two-tier policing.”
Digwa’s mother, Kiran Kaur, was also convicted in the case after she removed the knife used in the stabbing from the scene and hid it at her home.
The 53-year-old was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of assisting an offender. Kaur is serving her three-year sentence at HMP Bronzefield, the largest high-security prison for women in Europe. However, under sentencing reforms introduced by the Labour government, some prisoners who previously would have served half of their sentence may instead become eligible for release after serving one-third. If Kaur qualifies under the policy, her time spent on remand could be credited toward her sentence, resulting in an earlier release.
