August 30, (THEWILL) — Manchester United claimed their first English Premier League victory of the campaign following a dramatic 97th-minute penalty by captain, Bruno Fernandes, in a thrilling encounter at Old Trafford. The Red Devils overcame Burnley 3-2 in a match that saw four goals scored in quick succession during the second half, with the decisive spot-kick awarded after Amad Diallo was fouled inside the penalty area.
Ruben Amorim’s side responded positively after their midweek Carabao Cup exit against Grimsby Town, taking the lead through Josh Cullen’s unfortunate own goal. Mason Mount’s free-kick delivery struck the crossbar off Casemiro’s header before deflecting off the Burnley defender into the net, giving the home team a deserved advantage at the interval.
The second period erupted into life with three goals in rapid succession. Lyle Foster levelled matters for the visitors when he converted Jacob Bruun Larsen’s cross from close range, but Bryan Mbeumo immediately restored United’s lead with a composed finish from Diogo Dalot’s delivery. Jaidon Anthony then brought Burnley level again, capitalising on a goalmouth scramble following a long throw-in sequence.
United appeared destined for a frustrating draw until the closing moments when Anthony pulled Amad’s shirt inside the penalty box. Referee Sam Barrott initially waved play on but awarded the penalty after VAR intervention, presenting Fernandes with the opportunity to claim all three points from 12 yards.
The Portuguese midfielder held his nerve to convert the crucial penalty, registering his 99th goal for the club and providing Amorim with a vital first league victory. The result offers encouragement for United despite the defensive lapses that allowed Burnley to twice equalise during an eventful second half.
