SPECIES RESUMÉ
The wood is pink brown to red brown more or less dark and finely veined. Satin like aspect on quartersawn. It has clearly demarcated sapwood. The grain is straight or interlocked and the texture is fine. Density at 12 % moisture content: 0.87 g/cm3.
The blunting effect is fairly high to high (silica) and peeling and slicing is reported to be good. Requires power. Sawdust can irritate mucous membranes. Nailing is good but pre-boring is necessary. Tends to split in nailing. Gluing is correct and requires care (dense wood). It dries slowly. Surface drying under cover. Kiln drying must be handled with care. It is recommended to dry until a low moisture content (10-12 %) because of its shrinkage. Buy Wholesale Moabi Lumber at the lowest prices from African Forest Timber Ltd
Moabi is very durable to fungi and is durable to dry wood borers; sapwood demarcated (risk limited to sapwood). Due to its high specific gravity and high silica content, it naturally covers the biological hazard class 5 (end-uses in marine environment or in brackish water).
Moabi can be used for several applications such as: •
- Interior: e.g. high class furniture, flooring, veneer, stairs, panelling, joinery, sliced veneer, sculpture, industrial or heavy flooring
- Exterior: e.g. bridges, heavy carpentry, sleepers, joinery
Can be used as substitute for Makore (Tieghemella spp.).
